It's the smell and the flies that are the repellent.

Who wants to camp in a field that smells overpoweringly of pig shit?

In the village I grew up in once a year for about a week the farmers surrounding the valley it was nestled in would slurry their fields. I shit you not (pun intended) the eyes would water, the nose would burn, everyone would have their windows shut half baking to death rather than smell the damn stench.

It being within feet of, or worse, on your domicile is a fate worse than death.

Human excrement is widely used in the UK and Europe as fertiliser. It’s treated first to remove any contaminants and pathogens though.

Wouldn’t bet on it. That’s one of the big contentious points right now with waste companies supplying to farmers. The regulations were massively stripped back post brexit, and with privately held companies who govern themselves, a lot of shit slips through the cracks (literally).

Can you drive through the caravans and spray as well? Being from the US I find this fascinating. Our farmers are way less tolerant.

The US's interpretation of the Castle Doctrine or Stand Your Ground are pretty wild. If these people are on their property, depending on what state they are in it can be viewed as justifiable to shoot them if you feel they are endangering your within your property lines.

Reply
3
Posted by Piod1 2 weeks ago

In the US there is a huge nomadic population plus over a million folk living in the woods classed as transient. New legislation classes the transient as homeless and punitive measures, including work camps, are on the way. So much for land of the free eh

Posted by Happytallperson 2 weeks ago

No.

Ultimately, trespass is a civil offence, criminal damage is..well...criminal.

And spraying someone's vehicle with liquefied excrement is criminal damage.

The law expects you to go to court and get an injunction to have them removed from your land.

Once the injunction is in place either bailiffs or police can remove them, but most sensible groups would be gone before that.

Not entirely. I know of a few local farmers who admittedly 20 years ago did something similar to a layby near where I live. There was a spate of slurry protests against the council and a bank around the same time, they got arrested for that one. Seems legal still to say, I'm spreading this field tomorrow whether your in or out. Police will probably show up eventually to arrest the farmer nowadays in all honesty though

It's not a civil issue when they are trying to attack the people in the tractors.

I know you don't agree with the "civil issue" but and are just saying what the police say when you report it.

Reply
1
Posted by TomatoMiserable3043 3 weeks ago

Any solicitor worth his money would simply argue "There was no attack, my client reasonably believed that the driver of the tractor was attempting to commit the offence of administering a noxious substance with intent to injure, aggrieve or annoy and so used both his common law power of self-defence and his power under S3 of the Criminal Law Act to use force to prevent said offence".

Edit: my first sentence appeared a little biased, so I've removed it and left the last part.

Reply
2
Posted by clarkyyyyyy 3 weeks ago

Don't know where that's from, that is not where the defence of public/private defence comes from, commonly referred to as self-defence. S3 of the Criminal Law Act 1977 deals with conspiracy....

It's not a civil issue and hasn't been for a few years - it's a criminal offence under the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022.

This offence is committed when a person: Resides or intends to reside on land without the consent of the occupier.
Has at least one vehicle with them on the land.
Fails to leave the land or remove their property when requested to do so by the occupier or a police officer.
And, in doing so, they have caused, or are likely to cause, significant damage, disruption, or distress.

The key addition here is the criminalization of the act itself under these specific conditions. Before this Act, trespass was a civil matter, and police powers were more limited. This new offence provides a stronger legal basis for police to intervene and allows them to:
Arrest a person for committing the offence.
Seize vehicles that are involved.

The maximum penalty for this offence is a fine, a prison sentence of up to three months, or both.

> Before this Act, trespass was a civil matter

It still is. The 2022 Act doesn't criminalise trespass- it just creates a specific offence for which trespass is a precursor.

Reply
4
Posted by Proof_Drag_2801 3 weeks ago

Read the post again slowly.

Does the traveller incursion shown fit any of the criteria listed?

If it does then it's not a civil matter.

Reply
2
Posted by TomatoMiserable3043 3 weeks ago

The trespass is. The offence under the 2022 Act isn't. I was only referring to the former.

I agree that they're likely to be committing the offence- I just disagree that the trespass itself is criminal.

Edit: to be clear, your statement beginning "Before this Act..." seems to imply that trespass is now criminal. That's all I was responding to.

Reply
2
Posted by Proof_Drag_2801 3 weeks ago

So do you now agree that what we see here is not a civil issue?

Reply
3
Posted by TomatoMiserable3043 3 weeks ago

I always did, as I said above.

A second time- I simply disagreed with the implication that trespass itself was now criminal.

Edit: two criminal issues- the offence under the 2022 Act, and the offence under the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act.

Edit: if you're going to downvote, at least join in and discuss. It's not like this is a difference of opinion- it's the law.

Muck spreading with Cow makes me think of home. With pig, it also reminds me of home, but it's not pleasant.

I cannot believe how nasty some people are on here. Travellers need to stay somewhere and we, as a society, keep removing legitimate sites. Sure it’s great to spray shit everywhere but where is the compassion. In UK there are clearly defined procedures for removing travellers of inappropriate sites and they should be followed. What the farmers are doing in France, and it is the same in the UK is criminal and is assault.

Considering that video is from France a few years ago, these people are probably new aged travelers, who are basically intransigent hippies.

In general its a group of familes that live in caravans with no fixed abode, they "travel" the country and others. They are great people in my experiance, interesting society. They generaly pull their children out of School ASAP to teach them a trade of some sort. Despite this many are very wealthy and have successful businesses. The sons inherit everything, thee girls start a new family so "have to marry well". Im preaty sure very Catholic and often an Irish accent.

A very interesting sub-culture in the United Kingdom.

Wrong, we have a yearly visit from travellers at my grandparents estate in Brittany, they come for an annual faire. We’ve had them at other times too, mainly as seasonal workers, and sometimes they have come at unreasonable or less convenient times. Because we have always respected them they respect us and move on when asked.

I inherited the estate last year and have made it clear to the estate managers that they are to be continued to be welcomed.

I’m not a bigot and respect that whilst I would not live their lifestyle it’s perfectly acceptable.

Then you get a better class of traveller.

I've had them parked on the car park of my business premises on 4 occasions now.

Every single time they absolutely trashed the place. Left piles of (literal) shit and cost thousands of pounds worth of damage. I've been personally threatened with violence, as have my employees.

Trying to be accommodating doesn't work.

Reply

I saw something similar in the car park across from an office I used to work in. They used bolt cutters to destroy the gates leading into the car park and pulled up the hedge so they could drive their vehicles in. Completely trashed the place whilst their kids booted footballs against the office windows.

No our relationship has been built up over decades. The UK (and parts of France) has created the problems by being total shits to the traveller community.

Reply

Posted by 2Spot68 3 weeks ago

Good for you, but I'm not buying that.

There are two distinctly different types of traveller in the UK.

One type largely keep to themselves. I have a relative who is part of that community. Most people in the UK aren't even aware they exist.

The second type actively court aggro with local communities.

Have the second type been unfairly treated in the UK? On occasions sure (but then who hasn't?). But on the whole their treatment has been a lot more lenient than many other groups receive, given the magnitude of the trouble they cause.

My relationship with them goes back over 40 years. My first employer had massive problems with them going back decades before that.

I've tried accommodation. I've provided electric, I've provided water, etc. etc. They've no interest. The more you give, the more piss they take. Still trashed my place, trashed my neighbours, trashed my community. Still came back for more.

I'm done. Next time the gloves are off.

Buy some land

Let them stay

Report back on what happens

I live in UK and have land. I’ve just proposed one of my properties to be licensed as a traveller site but the local authority took the decision that it was not to be.

Just contact the travelling community and say they can use it anyway

They are the most wonderful people on earth

If I did that, I would be in breach of planning law and I'd take the legal hit/fine. What I have done is offer another less suitable field, and left it unlocked. I will annoy the local dog walkers cos it has a footpath running through it, but they were the bastards who objected to the original proposal.

BTW I'm pro the Romany community cos, like my Jewish family and my gay family were all persecuted as minorities. I have a real thing about giving minorities a break.

Fuck them - I live in an area where they try and break in to fields and squat during the summer - where ever they pitch up crime rises, anti-social behaviour rises, scams rise and the place is left trashed when the pathetic procedures are finally enforced which takes way too long, should be instant.

What the farmers did in France is fine, merely spraying their own fields, working the land as that's what they do.. no one was assaulted, not a single "innocent" traveler was touched

Curious what people think travellers and gypsies are actually supposed to do when no one wants them on any land.

Nobody wants me on their land either. I had to buy a house myself

If I wanted to keep horses I would have to buy a field and stables.

Maybe, just maybe if you have a Ferrari I dont have sympathy for you wanting to takeover someone elses land.

Do you have a garden you would offer up? Or a front drive.

I don't, I have to rent off a landlord because some people have land and others don't.

You should just travel to your neighbors and stop paying rent. Thats how it works right?

They don't move into people's houses though do they. They're parking on land.

Go pitch a tent in your neighbors yard and have a porta John delivered to the curb. Since you’re not in the house they won’t mind, right?

Landlords in the landlord sub are loving the false equivalences.

How is that a false equivilancy?? you literally said:

> They don't move into people's houses though do they. They're parking on land.

So, I asked why not park in your neighbors yard? OR, better drive down to the local park, and set up shop there- youre just parking afterall, so NBD.

Youre up and down this post being a contrarian twit about the whole thing, so I know you will just feign more ignorance or try to grandstand about how this is their culture, etc. People like you are the reason everyone hates PETA.

That's a bit rude. People just love to hate on travellers. If they bought their own land to live on they wouldn't be doing much travelling would they?

They would, and could. There are numerous traveller-owned sites around the country. The idea isn't to stay on these owned sites permanently (although some do, and they're still travellers) - it's to travel between them.

Space on these sites is rented by the traveller owners to the traveller occupants.

It's a bit odd to think that they would be compelled to stay permanently on any piece of land they own. As you say, they travel.

Good point. I might start sleeping in your bed actually as nobody else will let me. You okay with that?

I could buy my own of course, just don't fancy it when I can just have yours and see no repurcussions, also I will shit all over the bed and leave a dead horse there when I leave is that okay?

Would be unfair if you didn't let me because nobody else wants me either.

They're travellers. Not landowners. They travel. It's their culture.

That doesn't mean the rest of us have to deal with the outcome of their 'traveling'

They can travel all they want and see the sites like tourists if they want to, stay in a hotel. But we've had them near us and they absolutely destroy whatever town they roll into.

Because they're generally quite vile people, why would anyone want them? They "occupied" a field not far from where I live, and our robberies went from 1 in a year, to 24 in a month. Not to mention harassing the locals and businesses.

Awful people. They can buy a field. They won't.

Why was your whole village robbing the travellers? What did the travellers have that your village wanted to steal 24 times a month?
