Hi Guys,
A Landlord here. I have had an empty property for 1 year after some scum smashed it and left owing thousands in rent ( which annoyed me to no end).
I had a 6-month council tax-free period to repair the property, and I paid the other 6 months from the house account.
The next tenant had a 6-month short tenancy agreement and decided to move out, which is fine. How often can you claim that 6-month council tax-free period? I am assuming it is only once per set period from the council.
Any advice? I am not too bothered if it doesn't go out to rent again and i have to pay the council tax, as it will be sold when I get a chance from April 2026.
What council is this? You need to check the local councils rules on this. In my council you get no discount just because the property is empty and infact after it has been empty and unfurnished for 12 months your council tax doubles from the usual council tax.
It’s all local. We get nothing, you pay council tax as normal no matter what. Used to be 1/2 but nadda where we are now.
We get 6 months. If it is empty, then normal, then it doubles and doubles again up 800 % of the council tax.
But I will check the local council website what it says. Cheers for the direction
