What do you like about your mortgage broker?

As we know, there's a plethora of mortage brokers out there, and it has very much become a commoditised industry. For the most part, brokers have access to the same mortgages (notwithstanding non-mortgage lending).

It's the little things that can make a difference to your continued business with them.

For example, I have used a broker in the past who starts a new email thread for every communication, filling my inbox with lazily subject threads. Even after a request to keep things to a single thread.

Personally, my ideal would be a single IM thread over WhatsApp.

After many years in the industry I've been using one guy for a long, long time after a friend suggested him.

  • Ultra responsive
  • Has access to to practically everything and looks hard
  • Keeps a detailed list of all my mortgages, I NEVER have to remember or chase him. He messages me 5 months in advance just to see what is out there and to lock something in. If a better deal comes along in the mean time we go for that instead.
  • Knows the property market inside out. Has knowledge or an opinion on everything. I learned a lot from him and sometimes call him up to run things by him.
  • When I have complex mortgage situations (moving things around across multiple properties) he even often goes to the trouble of making a quick PowerPoint deck showing what i'm trying to do so that he understands exactly what i'm trying to achieve and if I can do it better.
  • Remembers my preferences. "You could go with Barclays but be aware they use QCAS solicitors and I remember you had a nightmare with them 6 years ago so bear that in mind".

My broker has become a personal friend. Over twenty years, he has saved me probably nearly £100k including getting me two 5 year fixed rates at 2.3% shortly before Truss wrecked the markets. My life (and the lives of my tenants) would be worse if he hadn't been around to guide me.

I used the same for 2 different mortgage deals, when it came to the 3rd he put his prices up so have recently used someone else who was over half the price cheaper & updates me via whatsapp and responds pretty much 24.7

Always worth asking people who they recommend.
